A useful resource for cancer in our pets

There are some oncologists within the veterinary world - mainly based in the states currently - who are starting to use a fully integrative approach to the treatment of cancer. One of these is Erin Bannick, a boarded veterinary oncologist who only practices integrative oncology. She layers in herbs and mushrooms alongside the more conventional chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, or uses them as a standalone treatment option depending on what she feels is best for her patient and what her clients' wishes are. She has a fantastic website that is accessible for both owners and vets and I would really recommend you have a read of it. It can be found here.

I particularly like her blog on food and feeding of cancer patients, whilst trying to avoid clients feeling the 'food feartopia' that this area can undoubtedly cause in some cases. This extolling of kindness to self in difficult times, particularly when related to a diagnosis of cancer in a loved one - really shines through and is something I think we all need to adopt.

She's also doing some really interesting research into the treatment of haemangiosarcomas; hopefully her research will lead to further advances in how we can help these patients. To my knowledge her data is not published yet, but has shown some really interesting results so far.

There are sections that are only available through her subscription service (as a vet I am able to subscribe to this and I subscribe because it is a wonderfully detailed resource that helps me ensure that I am doing my very best for my cancer patients), but there's a whole wealth of freely available information - have a look and see. I hope you find it as useful as I do.
